Dave Hamel's superb 1/48 scale P-47D-25. Dave added a lot of
extra detail to this Tamiya kit.
This plane was flown by Lawton Clark of the 87th Fighter Group, 84th
Fighter Squadron, 8th Air Force. Clark was killed in action on 10
September 1944 while strafing a train.
This is a P-47D-25RE. The RE denotes a plane manufactured at Republic’s
plant in Farmingdale, New York. Airframes from the Evansville, Indiana
factory were labeled RA. The plane’s serial number is 42-26590.
Dave made a number of improvements:
- He added spark plug wire and piping to the engine. 18 cylinders
meant 36 wires.
- The exhaust waste gate aft of the oil coolers is a bit
under-defined. He improved the area by cutting and reshaping. Cutting
the circumference of the flutter valve was also an improvement.
- He added an exhaust collector made of wire solder.
- He made a fuel tank filler cap using the Waldron punch-and-die set.
- He added wire brake lines to the main landing gear.
